Pete Romero Cross Country Coaching Career: Assisted his old college room mate Dan McKellip in 1971. The coach had a football coaching conflict and Pete Romero completed his student teaching and coached the El Paso High School Team. The UTEP senior coached Tony Zunica to a first place finish at the Texas State
Cross Country B Division in San Marcos Texas.
Coach Romero’s First head coaching job landed him at Bel Air High in El Paso , Texas where in 1972 The team won the league, the Regional and
placed third in the Texas State Championships in Austin , Texas.
In 1973 Bel Air High School won the league, the Regional and Texas State Championship in Austin, Texas. This was Ysleta Independent School District’s first athletic state championship.
In 1974 Bel Air High School Lost the league, upset El Paso High to win the Regionals and was Second at the State Championships by one point. Juan Trevizo, a senior at Bel Air tied for first place.
Coach Romero moved back to California, coached three years in the central Section and retired. Pete founded California Hispanic Athletic and Sports Foundation on September 3, 2009.
